Cryptocurrency and the Trump family’s wealth
One potential inquiry would examine how Trump and his family have increased their wealth while he has been in office. The House Oversight Committee, which Robert Garcia would likely chair if Democrats regain control, is already tracking the Trump family’s income from cryptocurrency projects and foreign deals, according to the report.
The committee estimates that Trump received $2.25 billion in foreign payments during the first year of his second presidential term.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, who could chair the House Judiciary Committee, has separately requested information about investments by 1789 Capital and American Ventures, venture firms linked to the president’s sons, Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.
Democrats want to examine companies that received investments from the president’s sons and later secured government contracts or favorable administration decisions. Trump’s dealings with the Internal Revenue Service, his Truth Social network and Jared Kushner’s business activities could also face scrutiny.
Pardons and energy deals
Another potential investigation would focus on Trump’s decisions to pardon convicted individuals with financial or political ties to his circle. Democrats also plan to review the administration’s energy and extraction agreements.
Those inquiries could include a proposed $1.2 billion settlement with a German energy company that would invest a significant share of the funds in a Louisiana liquefied natural gas project tied to a Trump donor.
Federal restructuring and immigration
Democrats plan to examine the administration’s broad restructuring of the federal government, including cuts to the civil service, the activities of DOGE, the dismantling of USAID and plans involving the Department of Education.
They also want to scrutinize the administration’s immigration actions. Potential subjects include the detention of U.S. citizens and lawful residents, immigration agencies’ operations, deaths in migrant detention centers, National Guard deployments and government contracts.
Criminal cases involving Trump’s political opponents could form another line of inquiry.
Foreign policy and potential conflicts of interest
Democrats may pay particular attention to Steve Witkoff’s and Jared Kushner’s roles in international negotiations. Rep. Gregory Meeks said potential conflicts of interest involving diplomatic activity could become the subject of an investigation.
Meeks cited a deal in which investors linked to the United Arab Emirates bought a $500 million stake in a cryptocurrency company run by Trump’s sons and Witkoff shortly before the president’s inauguration.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said Witkoff had sold his assets in the cryptocurrency project and that his private business and Kushner’s activities were not connected to their diplomatic work.
Other possible areas of investigation include trade policy, a war with Iran, U.S. actions concerning Venezuela, Gaza’s reconstruction and a new presidential aircraft gifted by Qatar.
Administration prepares for oversight
The Trump administration is preparing for the possibility that Democrats will take control of the House. White House lawyers are briefing political appointees on potential congressional oversight, while the Justice Department has raised the possibility of asserting executive privilege to limit responses to lawmakers’ requests.
Democrats have acknowledged that they would need to proceed cautiously with the investigations.
Separately, Trump previously promised to pay $5,000 to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win the midterm elections.
