Circle Research Proposes a Rescue Plan for Blockchains Against Quantum Attacks

The world of cryptocurrency is on high alert as Circle Research highlights the impending quantum threat, known as Q-Day. This pivotal moment could redefine blockchain security as we know it. By 2030, quantum computers may achieve levels of power that can compromise many existing blockchains. In response, Circle Research has outlined a comprehensive roadmap to bolster blockchain defenses against such threats.

Quantum Computing: A Looming Threat?

According to Circle’s analysis, cryptographic protocols relying on elliptic curves or RSA are particularly vulnerable due to their susceptibility to Shor’s algorithm. However, hash functions like SHA-256 and SHA-3 and symmetric encryption such as AES are deemed likely safe from quantum decryption efforts.
The urgency is underscored by regulatory demands from the US and EU. These authorities require critical infrastructure and national security systems to transition to post-quantum algorithms by 2030. For blockchain developers, this means updating every layer of their technological stack.

Toward Secure Connections and Consensus Mechanisms

Transitional efforts are already underway with TLS 1.3 supporting post-quantum algorithms. Major providers like Google and AWS have begun migrating services quietly. Notably, IBM’s development of a “quantum cat” with 120 qubits and Google’s verified Quantum Echoes algorithm mark substantial advancements in quantum computing.
A hybrid algorithm known as X25519MLKEM768 is emerging as an industry standard; its ML-KEM component is NIST-approved. Developers are advised to update TLS certificates and prepare for significantly larger public keys reaching up to 1216 bytes.

User Migration: Address Changes Ahead

Pre-Q-Day migration of active addresses using revealed public keys is crucial. Users must transition before these addresses become susceptible post-Q-Day. Passive addresses can theoretically be recovered after Q-Day using seed phrases under certain conditions.
The report also highlights vulnerabilities within Zero-Knowledge (ZK) systems used for privacy features in cryptocurrencies like SNARK solutions Groth16, Halo2, and PlonK which need replacing by more resilient options like STARK or SNARG systems despite their higher resource demands.
