Bitwise: The Next Crypto Bull Cycle to Be Slower and Less Volatile

The cryptocurrency landscape is poised for a shift as Bitwise’s Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan predicts that the forthcoming bull cycle will unfold at a more measured pace compared to previous rallies. According to a recent commentary on CoinDesk, Hougan believes this change is driven by evolving investor priorities, with growing attention on tokenization of real-world assets and artificial intelligence (AI) rather than traditional cryptocurrencies.

Investor Focus Shifts Towards Tokenization and AI

Hougan highlights that institutional market participants and capital management advisors are increasingly focusing on sectors like tokenization of tangible assets and AI. This trend marks a temporary decline in direct interest towards cryptocurrencies. “We’ve lost some investor attention due to other hot trends,” Hougan stated, suggesting that future bull markets might not only be slower but also exhibit reduced volatility.

Bitcoin’s Long-Term Potential Remains Strong

Despite the changing focus, enthusiasm for Bitcoin among registered investment advisors (RIAs) in the United States remains robust. Hougan has reiterated his long-term prediction for Bitcoin’s value, estimating it could exceed $1 million in the next ten years. However, he acknowledged uncertainty regarding whether the market has already hit its local bottom or when this might occur. Final conclusions about market cycles may only become clear after completing the current four-year cycle.

Market Dynamics during Bear Markets

During bear markets, investors often lean towards areas with more apparent practical applications. Hougan pointed out the rapid growth of stablecoins, which have reached a capitalization exceeding $322 billion. He also emphasized that traditional investors perceive tokenization of real assets as a more understandable segment than cryptocurrencies.
“In times of market uncertainty, people find it easier to gravitate towards something more tangible,” noted Hougan. Stablecoins and tokenization appear more relatable to most individuals than Bitcoin during such periods.
This evolving narrative underscores how technological advancements continue to shape investor perceptions and priorities within the cryptocurrency domain. As these developments unfold, stakeholders will need to adapt strategies to navigate both opportunities and challenges presented by this dynamic environment.
