Hackers stole 18,270 BTC worth about $1.4 billion from Binance on Oct. 29, 2026, according to TRM Labs. The amount exceeded the individual bitcoin holdings of Coinbase, Riot Platforms and Hut 8 and was close to SpaceX’s holdings, according to BitcoinTreasuries.

Binance’s total estimated losses from the attack across multiple blockchains were roughly $6.3 billion. TRM Labs linked the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group.

Stolen bitcoin surpasses several corporate holdings

BitcoinTreasuries data show that Coinbase holds 17,954 BTC, Riot Platforms holds 11,380 BTC and Hut 8 holds 10,278 BTC. The 18,270 BTC stolen from Binance exceeded each company’s holdings.

The amount was 442 BTC below SpaceX’s holdings of 18,712 BTC. Other major public bitcoin holders include Bullish with 22,000 BTC, MARA Holdings with 35,577 BTC and Strive with 43,000 BTC.

Strategy has the largest corporate reserve at 848,517 BTC. Japan’s Metaplanet holds 44,000 BTC, while Twenty One Capital holds 43,514 BTC.

For comparison, CoinGecko data show that the United Kingdom holds 61,245 BTC, China holds 190,000 BTC and the United States holds 329,693 BTC. The amount stolen from Binance was nearly 30% of the United Kingdom’s bitcoin holdings.

Binance allocates funds to cover losses

Binance said it was continuing to investigate the attack and had found no evidence that private keys had leaked from its wallets.

In an Oct. 30 statement, the exchange said it had allocated more than $6.34 billion of its own funds to cover losses. About $5 billion had already been set aside in the relevant tokens, while partners helped freeze roughly another $3 billion in assets.

Binance said it would absorb the incident’s financial impact rather than pass it on to users. The exchange temporarily suspended withdrawals while it conducted a security review of its infrastructure.
