Gold Surpasses U.S. Bonds in Global Reserves — ECB

The European Central Bank (ECB) recently reported a significant milestone: gold has overtaken U.S. Treasury bonds as a major component of global international reserves. This development marks a historical shift in how central banks manage their assets. The report reveals that by the end of 2025, gold constituted 27% of all global reserve assets held by central banks, up from 20% the previous year. Meanwhile, U.S. Treasuries saw their share decrease from 25% to 22%.

Geopolitical Tensions Fuel Gold Demand

According to ECB President Christine Lagarde, geopolitical risks are a crucial driver behind the increased demand for gold among central banks. As countries aim to diversify away from dependency on the dollar—a process accelerated after the U.S. froze part of Russia’s reserves in response to its invasion of Ukraine—gold has become increasingly attractive.
Central banks now control over 36,000 tons of gold globally, nearing levels last seen during the Bretton Woods era when reserves peaked at around 38,000 tons.

This shift towards gold also sparks discussions within cryptocurrency circles regarding potential changes in reserve capital allocations. Cryptoanalyst Muhammad Azhar suggests that this trend indicates a gradual move away from traditional debt models toward hard money reserves.
