In an important step towards blockchain decentralization, the team at Base has activated the Azul update on their mainnet. The enhancement introduces a cutting-edge multi-proof system that integrates zero-knowledge (ZK) technology with trusted execution environment (TEE) mechanisms.

Multi-Proof System: A Key Advancement

The core innovation of this update lies in its multi-proof system. By combining ZK proofs with TEE confirmations, Base aims to independently validate transaction correctness. If both types of proofs yield matching results, the time required for final fund withdrawals can be reduced to approximately one day. Moreover, should conflicts arise, permissionless ZK proofs have the capability to override TEE confirmations, thereby decreasing reliance on centralized components.

Transition from Optimism’s Stack

Azul also heralds a transition to a new software stack for Base. This includes adopting their own execution client, base-reth-node, and consensus client base-consensus developed from OP Kona. The move away from Optimism’s shared Superchain stack is significant as it represents Base’s self-sufficiency in handling upgrades.

Performance Enhancements and Future Plans

The updated clients have already demonstrated impressive results by reducing the number of empty blocks by about 99%, lowering them from approximately 200 to just two per day. Furthermore, the network experienced several performance spikes reaching 5000 transactions per second. As of late May 2026, Base boasted around $4.4 billion in total value locked (TVL) and stablecoin volumes nearing $4.98 billion—making it one of the largest Ethereum rollups by liquidity.
Looking forward, two more updates are scheduled for release in late 2026: one will focus on boosting network performance while the other aims at enhancing user experience and supporting native account abstraction.
This strategic progression not only reinforces Base’s position within the cryptocurrency landscape but also aligns with Ethereum rollups’ second phase requirements for decentralization—a crucial step towards achieving robust censorship resistance across networks globally.
