The Rise of Crypto-Related Kidnappings in France

In a shocking incident that underscores the increasing risks faced by those involved in cryptocurrency, unknown assailants attempted to kidnap the wife of Sébastien Borget, co-founder and COO of the metaverse platform The Sandbox. According to French publication Le Journal du Dimanche, this alarming event took place in Villedieu, located in Seine-et-Marne.
The attackers employed a cunning strategy by posing as delivery personnel to gain access to Borget’s residence. Reports indicate that a man wearing a courier’s vest approached with a cardboard box, luring Borget’s wife to open the gates. Subsequently, several hooded individuals stormed into the courtyard.

A Narrow Escape Thanks to Vigilant Neighbors

In an attempt marked by violence, the intruders forcibly dragged Borget’s wife towards their vehicle. However, her cries for help alerted nearby neighbors who swiftly intervened. This unexpected resistance forced the attackers to flee from the scene.
The swift response from local authorities led to the arrest of two suspects shortly after. These individuals were teenagers born in 2009 and 2010; they were found with fake firearms, plastic ties, and balaclavas. The police are currently delving into other aspects of this attack.

Linking Crypto Ventures with Crime

This incident is part of a disturbing trend where individuals connected to cryptocurrency are becoming targets for criminal activity. With Sébastien Borget being one of The Sandbox founders—a blockchain platform based on Ethereum involving NFTs and SAND tokens—the attack raises questions about whether his professional ventures influenced this crime.
France has seen an unsettling increase in crypto-related abductions or attempts thereof since 2026. According to data from France’s National Directorate of Judicial Police, there have been 41 such incidents within this year alone. Since 2023, there have been 135 reported cases across France—constituting approximately 80% of all recorded instances throughout Europe.

A Call for Enhanced Security Measures

Previously reported attacks targeted not only industry professionals but also their families. In April alone, one family was coerced at gunpoint into transferring digital assets worth approximately $820,000. Similar attempts included plans against Pierre Noizat’s daughter (founder of Paymium) and Binance France’s executive leader.
Given these troubling developments within their borders—and considering global implications—French authorities are actively crafting additional security protocols tailored specifically for those engaged within cryptocurrencies.
As we continue witnessing developments around this complex issue impacting both security landscapes globally alongside ever-evolving technological advancements—it remains essential staying informed while advocating proactive measures safeguarding stakeholders operating across dynamic blockchain ecosystems worldwide.
