JPMorgan: Ethereum and Altcoins Trail Behind Bitcoin Without On-Chain Activity Boost

In the ever-evolving landscape of cryptocurrency, significant shifts and trends often dictate market dynamics. According to a recent report by JPMorgan, Ethereum and the broader altcoin market are unlikely to catch up with Bitcoin unless there is substantial growth in network activity and decentralized finance (DeFi) development.
Ethereum’s Performance vs. Bitcoin
The report highlights that Ethereum has been underperforming compared to Bitcoin in both price dynamics and institutional capital flows since the crypto market crash in October 2025. Analysts at JPMorgan noted that despite the recovery of the crypto market following geopolitical tensions, Ethereum’s performance remains lackluster.
Moreover, spot Bitcoin ETFs have managed to recover about two-thirds of previous capital outflows, whereas spot Ethereum ETFs have only compensated for approximately one-third. This indicates a disparity in investor confidence towards these cryptocurrencies.
Speculative Investor Behavior
JPMorgan also pointed out that speculative investors, particularly funds and traders utilizing automated strategies and algorithms, have yet to rebuild significant long positions in either Bitcoin or Ethereum. This cautious approach further underscores the hesitancy within the market.
Despite these challenges, the crypto market has shown partial stabilization after conflicts between Iran and Israel, attributed to the round-the-clock liquidity of cryptocurrency markets and a gradual return of institutional demand.
Future Updates for Ethereum
Looking ahead, JPMorgan discussed upcoming updates for Ethereum—Glamsterdam and Hegota—anticipated in 2026. These upgrades aim to enhance network scalability and reduce transaction costs. However, analysts caution that previous updates did not significantly boost on-chain activity. Additionally, reduced fees in Layer 2 networks have weakened Ethereum’s burning mechanism while increasing its net supply.
Larger Altcoin Market Challenges
Other altcoins also face hurdles due to weak liquidity, low market depth, and diminished investor trust following numerous hacking incidents and issues within the DeFi sector. Repeated exploits continue to weigh heavily on the cryptocurrency market by restraining capital inflows and hindering institutional adoption of digital assets.
While some signs of recovery are emerging within the altcoin market as reported by CryptoQuant earlier this year, persistent security concerns remain a significant barrier.
In summary, unless there is a notable surge in network activity paired with robust DeFi advancements, Ethereum along with other altcoins will likely continue their existing trend of lagging behind Bitcoin. As developments unfold within this dynamic field, it becomes increasingly crucial for stakeholders across industries—from developers working on infrastructure improvements through policymakers crafting regulations—to closely monitor these changes impacting global financial ecosystems at large.
