Scammer Attack Unleashed
The large-scale Wormhole airdrop became a hotspot for scammers, leading to an influx of fraudulent accounts on X (formerly known as “Twitter”). On-Chain detective ZachXBT highlighted the emergence of phishing accounts under the official airdrop announcement, cautioning users against fake accounts adorned with counterfeit verification badges. These accounts, mimicking the Cross-Chain Protocol‘s name, tempted users with phishing links under the guise of claiming W tokens. Moreover, the co-founder of Wormhole, Robinson Berki’s profile was compromised, spreading airdrop posts with links to Wallet drainers. Thankfully, access to the account was restored, but it has since been made private.
Potential Hacker Claims on the Airdrop
An intriguing detail about the Wormhole airdrop was the oversight in excluding hacker addresses from the airdrop list. These addresses were associated with a 2022 attack on the protocol’s bridge, resulting in a loss of over $320 million. Had the attackers decided to participate, they could have claimed 31,000 W tokens, valued at approximately $50,000 at current prices. This oversight highlights significant security vulnerabilities in the distribution process of crypto airdrops.
Impact on the W Token’s Price
Concurrent with the airdrop, major cryptocurrency exchanges listed the W token, which debuted at $1.66 but has since plummeted nearly 30%. According to CoinGecko, the W token is currently trading at $1.18, with its value fluctuating between $1.14 and $1.66.
