Metaplanet Reports $725 Million Loss in Q1—20 Times Last Year’s Figure
In an unexpected turn for the cryptocurrency world, Metaplanet disclosed a staggering $725 million loss in the first quarter of 2026. This represents an astonishing increase compared to the mere $31 million loss during the same period last year. The Japanese company’s financial struggles have been attributed to a decline in Bitcoin reserve values amidst market corrections.
Bitcoin Accumulation Amidst Market Volatility
Despite facing substantial losses, Metaplanet continues its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy. Over the quarter, they acquired an additional 5,075 BTC, bringing their total reserves to an impressive 40,177 BTC. At the time of reporting, these assets were valued at approximately $3.18 billion.
Impact on Stock Performance and Market Capitalization
The financial turbulence has not gone unnoticed in stock markets. Over the past six months, Metaplanet’s stock values have dropped by 20%, trading at $309 per share with a market capitalization hovering around $418.5 billion as per TradingView.
Postponement of New Product Launches
In addition to financial hurdles, Metaplanet announced delays in launching their new preferred shares named MARS and MERCURY. Initially introduced in November 2025, these products are designed as capital-raising tools underpinned by their Bitcoin strategy. CEO Simon Gerovich acknowledged these delays but emphasized their continued commitment to bringing these products to market.
Diversification into Cryptocurrency Operations
Originally entrenched in the hotel industry, Metaplanet has shifted focus significantly towards cryptocurrency operations as a major revenue stream. In Q1 alone, revenue from selling option contracts on assets surged to $15.8 million from just $4.8 million last year.
As Metaplanet navigates through challenging times with a bold stance on cryptocurrency investments and strategic delays in product launches, it underscores both opportunities and risks associated with heavy reliance on volatile digital assets like Bitcoin.
