Lost 4500 BTC, Russian Connections, and Criminal Ties: What’s Wrong with Zondacrypto?

In recent developments, the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto has come under intense investigation by Polish prosecutors due to allegations involving fraud and money laundering. The platform’s current turmoil reflects a series of complaints from clients unable to withdraw their funds. Adding to the controversy, Prime Minister Donald Tusk publicly accused the company of lobbying politicians against crypto regulations while hinting at potential connections with Russian entities.

The Rise and Troubled Past of Zondacrypto

Originally entering the market as BitBay in 2014, Zondacrypto was founded by Sylwester Suszek, a well-known figure in Poland’s bitcoin community. Initially registered in Katowice as an LLC, the platform soon caught the attention of Poland’s Financial Supervision Authority for unlicensed payment services. Subsequently relocating to Malta and later acquiring an Estonian license under Pinewood Estonia OÜ (now BB Trade Estonia OÜ), the company continued evolving amidst financial oversight challenges.
Reports have highlighted concerning links between early investors like Marek K., convicted for serious crimes in the past, and Roman Ż., associated with various illicit activities. Suszek acknowledged initial investments from these individuals but denied their involvement in management affairs. However, further investigations disclosed that these figures had significant stakes initially.

Financial Instability and Withdrawal Issues

By 2024, amid media scrutiny and regulatory pressures, reports indicated a massive capital outflow from Zondacrypto. At one point in August 2024, only 55.7 BTC remained on hot wallets; this drastically dropped to just 0.18 BTC by March 2026. In January 2025, Poland’s Office of Competition and Consumer Protection began investigating BB Trade Estonia OÜ following numerous complaints regarding withdrawal freezes.
CEO Przemysław Kral attributed withdrawal delays to technical issues requiring manual processing while assuring customers about asset safety stored on cold wallets.

Political Allegations and Regulatory Concerns

Amidst growing concerns over consumer protection due to unclear regulations—highlighted by Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski—the absence of firm legal frameworks exposes users to risks within Poland’s crypto markets. Prime Minister Tusk criticized President Karol Nawrocki for twice vetoing comprehensive legislative proposals meant to regulate cryptocurrencies effectively.
Tusk alleged that Zondacrypto financially supported certain political figures opposing increased regulation—a move allegedly aligned with its interests—and suggested links between its founding capital and Russian mafia operations.

Crisis Management within Zondacrypto

Facing mounting pressure both internally and externally from stakeholders like Veronika Togo who resigned citing discrepancies hindering oversight responsibilities; coupled with publicized threats towards journalists investigating its history—Zondacrypto remains embroiled amid complex legal challenges involving accusations extending beyond standard business disputes into broader geopolitical spectrums significantly impacting investor confidence across global cryptocurrency exchanges today!
