Italian Bank Intesa Sanpaolo Spends $96 Million on Bitcoin ETF

In a bold move that highlights the growing intersection of traditional banking and cryptocurrency investment, Italian banking giant Intesa Sanpaolo has disclosed a substantial investment in Bitcoin ETFs, amounting to around $96 million. This strategic financial maneuver underscores the bank’s increasing involvement in the digital currency market.

Investment Details: A Closer Look at Intesa Sanpaolo’s Crypto Moves

According to their latest Form 13F filing, for the quarter ending December 2025, Intesa Sanpaolo holds five positions in spot Bitcoin ETFs. The most significant of these are:
– $72.6 million invested in ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF.
– $23.4 million placed into iShares Bitcoin Trust.
Additionally, the bank has ventured into other areas of cryptocurrency by investing $4.3 million in Bitwise Solana Staking ETF. This particular ETF tracks Solana’s price while considering staking rewards.

Strategic Hedging: The Put Option on Strategy Stocks

Beyond direct investments in cryptocurrencies and related funds, Intesa Sanpaolo has adopted a hedging strategy through a substantial put-option position on Strategy stocks—valued at approximately $184.6 million. Strategy is recognized as one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin with over 714,644 BTC.
The put option provides Intesa Sanpaolo with the right—but not the obligation—to sell shares at a predetermined price in the future. Paired with their long position in Bitcoin ETFs, this tactic may suggest an intention to capitalize on any narrowing gap between Strategy’s stock premium and its actual Bitcoin reserves value—measured via mNAV (multiple of net asset value).

Diversified Exposure: Broader Crypto Investments

Alongside these major investments, Intesa Sanpaolo has diversified its crypto exposure with smaller stock positions in other prominent crypto companies such as Coinbase, Robinhood, BitMine, and ETHZilla. Notably, their largest stake among these is approximately $4.4 million invested in Circle.
The report indicates that these investment decisions were made collaboratively by Intesa Sanpaolo S.p.A. and affiliated asset managers under the “DFND” designation—though it remains unclear whether this pertains specifically to their proprietary trading division or institutional clients.
Interestingly enough, while the parent company advances further into digital assets territory internationally through such strategic oversight and subsidiary execution policies; its American capital management arm submitted another form without any digital asset exposure.
Earlier last year—marking another milestone—the bank acquired 11 BTC worth over $1 million as part of ongoing operations conducted by its own trading department specializing also within cryptocurrency realm for several years now.
In essence—from investing heavily across various dimensions within cryptosphere down tactical hedges aligned against key industry players—Intresa showcases calibrated approach blending both innovation along risk management principles thereby setting new benchmarks how traditional finance intersects burgeoning digital landscapes today!
