Recently, the cryptocurrency market experienced a dramatic downturn as Bitcoin’s value plummeted below $82,000. The report by Bybit and Block Scholes highlights that this decline not only erased gains since the beginning of 2025 but also placed many ETF investors in a precarious financial position. With an entry price averaging around $89,000, these investors find themselves “underwater.”

The downturn was exacerbated by unexpected U.S. employment figures showing 119,000 new jobs in September against an anticipated 50,000. This development led to speculation that the Federal Reserve might delay rate cuts planned for December. Earlier this year, the Fed reduced rates by 0.25% twice.
Some analysts anticipate a “Santa rally,” driven by potential monetary easing from the Fed. However, CryptoQuant posits that Bitcoin might fall further to between $60,000 and $80,000 if no rate cut occurs.

The report suggests that the spike in short-term volatility was anticipated as traders increased premiums for bearish put options. Both Bitcoin’s and Ethereum’s implied volatility exceeded levels seen after significant drops earlier this year.
Traders are pricing over 10% volatility premiums for put options expiring within a week. Despite continued declines—first to $95,000 then to $90,000—open interest has not dropped significantly. This trend indicates that sell-offs are largely spot-market-driven rather than leveraging credit.

Interestingly, retail traders on Bybit have been hesitant to open new long positions despite falling prices. The report notes that open interest remains subdued compared to pre-downturn levels of approximately $16 billion earlier this year.
As Bitcoin dipped below symbolic thresholds like $90,000 and eventually reached levels unseen since April 2025 at $82,000—the market witnessed substantial liquidation volumes exceeding $1.9 billion.
