Bitcoin Alert: $130 Million Confiscated Crypto Moves to Coinbase – Unfolding Silk Road Saga

3 Min Read Tags:

On April 2, the US government made a massive move in the crypto market. About 2,223 Bitcoin (BTC), valued at approximately $130 million, was transferred to a wallet linked to the renowned crypto exchange, Coinbase.

This transfer aligns with a sale the US government filed in January to sell about $130 million worth of seized Bitcoin. The news of this transfer has been a hot topic within the crypto community, with many speculating about the government’s plans for its digital assets.

Coinbase Transfer

An initial test transaction was first noted by on-chain sleuth ZachXBT. The test involved a transfer of 0.001 BTC, about $69, to a Coinbase address. This test signifies meticulous planning on the part of the government. The transaction hash was identified as:

“9c3af4b48e66565f1da1da8278036fa1dbb09f2beaaca99c3504475390ba4590”

The Coinbase deposit address was:

“3KrZVU9Jz4UKHpKUtuvkEMX1tY8zeiTvX2.”

Following the announcement of this transfer, Bitcoin’s value dipped below $65,000 but has since recovered slightly, currently trading at $65,200, down by 4.7% in the last 24 hours. This movement mirrors the broader market downturn, with the CoinDesk 20 Index also falling by 4.7%.

Silk Road Bitcoin

The transferred Bitcoin is part of approximately 50,000 BTC that the US government seized in late 2022. These coins were associated with the infamous Silk Road website, a dark web marketplace that the FBI shut down in 2013.

Blockchain analysis firm, Arkham Intelligence, identified the receiving wallet as part of Coinbase, suggesting that the government might be preparing for a sale or exchange of the Bitcoin. The last significant sale the government reported was in March 2023, where it sold 9,861 BTC for about $216 million.

The crypto community is closely monitoring the effects of this substantial transfer, speculating on the US government’s strategy for its remaining Bitcoin holdings. It is unclear whether the Bitcoin will be sold immediately or gradually over time. The impact of this transfer on the digital assets market is expected to trigger discussions on the management and sale of seized digital assets.

Editor’s Note: Article updated to clarify that the entire 30,175 was not moved to Coinbase. Only 2,223 BTC are set to be sold based on previous announcements made by the DoJ.
