Cash App Integrates Bitcoin and Stablecoins for Instant Payments

Cash App, a prominent payment application owned by Block Inc., has announced significant advancements in its cryptocurrency offerings. These developments, detailed in a recent release, include the capacity for instant Bitcoin transactions without necessitating ownership of the digital currency. Users can now send USD through the app, which will convert these into stablecoins in real-time, facilitating broader access to crypto transactions.

Revolutionary Features: Bridging Fiat and Cryptocurrency

The new feature, “Bitcoin Payments with USD,” stands out as a transformative tool allowing users to make purchases using Bitcoin even if they do not hold any themselves. The system automatically converts USD from the user’s balance into Bitcoin for merchants via the Lightning Network. This innovation makes crypto payments accessible to all 58 million Cash App users without tax implications or reducing personal Bitcoin holdings.
Additionally, Cash App has launched an interactive “Bitcoin Map,” enabling users to locate businesses that accept Bitcoin and make direct payments through the app. This initiative supports local economies by integrating digital assets into everyday transactions.

The Role of Stablecoins: Money 1.5

Miles Suter from Block Inc., who leads their Bitcoin division, refers to stablecoins as “Money 1.5.” He describes them as an intermediary between conventional financial systems and decentralized currencies like Bitcoin. While traditional fiat is deemed “Money 1.0″—slow and costly—Bitcoin represents “Money 2.0,” embodying decentralized, open, permissionless financial interaction. Stablecoins serve as a practical tool enhancing older systems without competing with Bitcoin’s ultimate goals.
Cash App’s support for stablecoins allows global sending and receiving via their platform, ensuring transaction stability by converting received amounts back into USD seamlessly.

A Vision of Self-Custody

Suter emphasizes that the company’s long-term goal is enabling users’ self-custody of funds: “If accessing fiat requires centralized providers now, our end goal is self-preservation.” With this vision in mind, Block Inc. has developed Bitkey technology and plans automatic transfer features towards user-managed storage by 2026.
In October 2025, Compass Coffee in Washington became the first company to test this new system via Square terminals using Lightning Network technology.
Through these forward-thinking integrations and developments, Cash App is not only making strides in enhancing user experience but also contributing significantly towards mainstream acceptance and use of cryptocurrencies within daily financial activities.
