Bitcoin ETF issuer, VanEck is set to manage the reserve fund for a new stablecoin venture, Agora Dollar (AUSD), following a successful $12 million funding round led by the crypto venture fund, Dragonfly. The company behind this stablecoin, founded by Nick Van Eck, Drake Evans, and Joe McGrady, aims to disrupt the market with its customer-oriented approach within a compliant structure. Agora Dollar is a fully collateralized, fiat-backed stablecoin that promises to return its revenue back to the ecosystem, prioritizing those who drive utility and liquidity.
The Vision of Agora Dollar
According to Agora, “digital dollars should be treated akin to public goods.” This vision is reflected in their business model where they plan to return their revenue back to the ecosystem, especially to those who drive utility and liquidity. The company has revealed its focus on regulatory compliance and is actively pursuing licenses where applicable. However, its services are presently only available in select markets outside the United States.
As part of their compliance measures, the cash custodian of Agora’s reserve fund will be one of the world’s largest custodians. In addition, the reserve fund assets will be held in trust, bankrupt remotely, and regularly audited, ensuring maximum security and transparency for all stakeholders.
Stablecoin Market Experiences Growth
Agora’s launch coincides with the rapid growth of the stablecoin market, which has seen an influx of major financial players like PayPal and decentralized finance projects like Aave and Ethena. Data from CryptoSlate shows that the sector’s total market capitalization has grown by 15% year-to-date to approximately $150 billion, its highest level since the FTX collapse in November 2022.
Tether’s USDT continues to dominate the market, holding more than 69% of the market share. Its growth trajectory remains strong as it expands to new blockchain networks, with its market capitalization currently hovering around $104 billion. Meanwhile, Circle’s USDC is experiencing a significant resurgence amidst the bull market, with its supply increasing by 22% in the first quarter of the year to $32.7 billion. New players such as Ethena’s USDe synthetic dollar are also drawing attention due to their attractive yield models.
