PayPal Expands Stablecoin PYUSD to New Heights

In a significant development for the cryptocurrency sector, PayPal has announced the expansion of its stablecoin, PayPal USD (PYUSD), onto eight additional blockchains. This strategic move is geared towards increasing the accessibility and utility of PYUSD across multiple platforms. The integration leverages LayerZero’s Stargate Hydra bridge, enabling seamless issuance, burning, and cross-chain transfers of this digital asset.

Seamless Integration Across Multiple Blockchains

The expansion features the inclusion of Tron, Avalanche, Aptos, Abstract, Ink, Sei, and Stable networks. Meanwhile, two existing versions on Berachain and Flow will be upgraded to meet the PYUSD0 standard. Furthermore, PayPal has confirmed the launch of support for the Stellar network. This broadened availability positions PYUSD as one of the most accessible stablecoins in terms of blockchain reach.

A Competitive Landscape

Despite this progress, PYUSD still trails behind leading stablecoins such as USDT and USDC. According to CoinGecko data, USDT spans 12 networks with a market cap of $171.2 billion while USDC encompasses 25 networks with a volume of $74.3 billion. In contrast, PYUSD holds 11th place with a capitalization nearing $1.3 billion.

The Growing Stablecoin Market

The stablecoin market continues its upward trajectory. A forecast by the U.S. Department of Treasury in April 2025 projected that the total volume could rise from $295 billion to an impressive $2 trillion by 2028. This growth momentum has been further propelled by the GENIUS Act enacted in July—a comprehensive regulatory framework for stablecoins in the United States.

A Visionary Perspective

Brian Pellegrino, CEO of LayerZero Labs, referred to this asset class as a “killer app” for cryptocurrencies. He emphasized that PayPal’s integration signifies a shift towards a new financial system that operates without interruptions or borders.
Now any user who independently holds their PYUSD can transfer it between networks without relying on traditional banking infrastructure,” Pellegrino pointed out.
This bold move underscores PayPal’s commitment to advancing financial innovation through blockchain technology while highlighting an emerging era where financial transactions are borderless and seamless across various digital environments.
In conclusion—while there are challenges ahead—the expansion into multiple blockchains marks another milestone in making digital finance more inclusive than ever before!
