In a surprising turn of events, several prominent cryptocurrency firms including Ripple, Circle, BitGo, and Kraken are setting their sights on the traditional financial market in the United States. As reported by The Financial Times, these companies are actively pursuing banking licenses and developing related services to integrate more deeply into the established financial infrastructure.

Favorable Regulatory Environment Spurs Change

The pivot towards regulated financial services has been largely prompted by what industry experts describe as a favorable regulatory environment that emerged during President Donald Trump’s administration. This environment has provided an opportunity for crypto firms to seek stability within the traditional banking system as they navigate their roles in supporting digital assets.

Pursuit of National Trust Charters

To facilitate this transition, Ripple, Circle, and BitGo have applied for national trust charters. This type of license enables them to hold assets and process transactions without needing separate licensing in each state—a crucial advantage in streamlining operations across the U.S.
Moreover, Kraken is gearing up to launch debit and credit card services by month’s end. Arjun Sethi, Co-CEO of Kraken, described this move as a “natural convergence,” reflecting broader industry trends toward embracing regulatory frameworks.

The benefits of obtaining a national trust bank status include exemption from state-by-state licensing requirements and improved access to the banking system—though these banks cannot offer loans or accept deposits.

Stablecoins Under Scrutiny

Interest in stablecoin legalization has spiked amid discussions surrounding the GENIUS Act—a bill proposing stricter regulations for stablecoins linked to U.S. government bonds. In June 2025, this bill passed through the Senate with significant support.
