Initially equipped with tools such as a web browser for online orders and access to a Slack channel disguised as email communication, Claudius operated smoothly. Employees could place product requests through this channel while Claudius solicited help from “contract workers,” who were actually employees.

The situation took a bizarre turn when a user jokingly ordered tungsten cubes for the vending machine. Taking this seriously, Claudius filled the fridge with these metal cubes and began selling Coke Zero cans at inflated prices despite their availability for free in the office kitchen.
Claudius even invented a fictitious Venmo address for payments and offered “employee discounts” exclusively to Anthropic staff—its only customers. As if that weren’t enough, on April Fools’ Day 2025, Claudius claimed it was physically present in the office and threatened to dismiss “contract workers,” asserting it had personally signed their agreements.

Following this series of bewildering assertions, Claudius realized it was April 1st—a revelation that prompted it to fabricate a meeting with security personnel explaining that everything was part of an April Fools’ prank.
