Pretending to be Google support staff, they tricked their victim into revealing sensitive information like keys and passwords before transferring all crypto assets away.
Notably, one criminal streamed the event live. Their capture was partly due to ZachXBT, a crypto detective who noticed unusual activity on a cryptocurrency exchange. After contacting the victim, he was hired to trace the culprits.

Ongoing Investigation: New Charges Filed

In September 2024, charges were filed against Lam by the U.S. Justice Department. He is scheduled for trial on October 6, 2025. The latest developments reveal that while incarcerated, Lam continued overseeing an organized crime group involved in extensive crypto-related offenses.
This syndicate emerged in fall 2023 through online gaming platforms where members assumed distinct roles—from hacking systems to laundering money using mixers.

The Lavish Life Funded by Crypto Crime

Operating domestically and internationally, this group’s illicit gains funded opulent lifestyles including night club expenses up to $500,000. Even while imprisoned, Lam reportedly managed operations that amassed luxury cars and properties across Miami and Los Angeles.
The Justice Department notes some suspects remain detained while others are believed to be overseas in Dubai.
