JPMorgan: Bitcoin Mining Profitability Falls for Third Consecutive Month

Bitcoin mining, a cornerstone of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, has witnessed a significant decline in profitability, marking a record low for the third month in a row. According to an insightful report by JPMorgan, mining companies earned an average of $42,100 per 1 EH/s daily in September 2024. This represents a notable reduction from the $43,600 per 1 EH/s reported in August.

Declining Revenues Despite Increased Hashrate

JPMorgan’s analysis highlights a 2% increase in Bitcoin’s average hashrate compared to August 2024, reaching 643 EH/s. However, this rise did not translate into higher revenues for mining companies. Instead, the average daily income per exahash per second fell by 6%. Such a discrepancy underscores the complex dynamics at play within the Bitcoin mining sector.

Transaction Fees and Market Valuation

The report also sheds light on the restrained transaction fees, which did not exceed 5% of the block reward. Despite the declining revenues, the overall market valuation of Bitcoin mining firms saw an upward trend. The combined market capitalization of 14 public American companies in this space increased by 4%, surpassing the $21 billion mark. This growth indicates a resilient market sentiment toward the long-term potential of Bitcoin mining operations.

Volatility Insights

Bitcoin’s annual volatility, another critical metric observed by JPMorgan, fell to 44% in September from 62% in August 2024. This reduction in volatility could present a more stable investment environment for stakeholders and might influence future strategic decisions within the industry.
The ongoing trend of declining profitability amid increasing hashrates and stable transaction fees raises critical questions about the future of Bitcoin mining. As the sector navigates these challenges, the broader implications for the cryptocurrency market remain a topic of keen interest among investors and analysts alike.
