FTX to Compensate Preferred Shareholders with 100% of Assets

In a significant development for the cryptocurrency market, FTX has announced a comprehensive plan to compensate preferred shareholders. According to the representatives of the collapsed exchange, the company is committed to returning 100% of assets that were under FTX’s control at the time of its bankruptcy. This initiative marks a pivotal step in addressing the financial repercussions faced by the victims of the fraudulent scheme orchestrated by entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried and the former management of the platform.

DOJ Oversight and Settlement Details

The distribution of these assets will be supervised by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). As per FTX’s update, some of the preferred shareholders have competing claims that need to be resolved. The DOJ and FTX specialists are tasked with finding a compromise to settle these disputes. The company emphasized that a fair settlement acceptable to the DOJ would help avoid conflicts of interest and streamline the compensation process.

Centralized Distribution Process

FTX proposes a centralized distribution process to expedite the compensation payments and minimize excessive costs. This approach is expected to facilitate quicker payouts, ensuring that the affected clients receive their due assets without undue delays. The company is optimistic that this method will prevent prolonged disputes among the shareholders.

Compensation Timeline and Amounts

Contrary to some earlier reports, which suggested that compensation would begin on September 30, 2024, judicial documents indicate that a hearing on the asset reorganization plan is scheduled for October 7. According to Sunil Kavuri, a creditor of FTX, the affected users are expected to receive compensation ranging from 10% to 25% of the value of their deposited crypto assets. This relatively low compensation rate is attributed to the conversion of digital assets into cash based on the exchange rate at the time of the bankruptcy filing.

Addressing Previous Legal Disputes

FTX has previously taken steps to resolve its legal disputes, including filing a motion to settle a case with Emergent Technologies worth $600 million. These efforts are part of the broader strategy to stabilize the company and provide fair compensation to its clients.
The FTX compensation plan, if successfully implemented, will set a precedent in the crypto industry for handling bankruptcy and fraud cases. It highlights the importance of regulatory oversight and a structured settlement process in restoring trust and confidence among investors and stakeholders in the digital asset market.
