Ethena Labs to Launch New Stablecoin UStb Backed by BlackRock Fund

Ethena Labs has announced plans to launch a new stablecoin, UStb. According to The Block, this new digital asset will be backed by BlackRock’s tokenized treasury fund, BUIDL. The company aims to use UStb as margin collateral on centralized exchanges, including Bybit and Bitget.

Details on UStb

The decentralized protocol team at Ethena revealed that UStb will function similarly to traditional stablecoins. With backing from BUIDL, which invests in U.S. treasury bills, repo agreements, and fiat currency, Ethena intends to carve out a new niche in the market. Launched in March 2024, BUIDL has quickly become the largest tokenized fund in the U.S., managing assets worth over $522 billion.

Partnership with Securitize

Ethena Labs will partner with asset tokenization platform Securitize to launch UStb. The team emphasized that UStb will be a “completely independent product” offering a distinct risk profile compared to Ethena’s current stablecoin, USDe. The introduction of UStb could help USDe withstand challenging market conditions by allowing Ethena Labs to close hedging positions underlying USDe and reallocate collateral assets into UStb.

Market Implications

The launch of UStb aims to provide an alternative for traders and investors, enhancing their ability to manage risk. Ethena’s existing stablecoin, USDe, already ranks fifth in market capitalization among stablecoins, valued at $2.55 billion according to DeFiLlama. The new stablecoin could further solidify Ethena’s position in the expanding stablecoin market.

Impact on ENA Token

Following the announcement, Ethena’s native token, ENA, saw a significant increase of over 11% within 24 hours, trading near $0.35, based on data from TradingView. This uptick reflects growing investor confidence in Ethena’s innovative products and strategic partnerships.

Looking Ahead

Ethena Labs continues to lead in the decentralized applications (dApps) sector, having ranked first in revenue among dApps as of March. The introduction of UStb, supported by BlackRock’s BUIDL, positions Ethena for further growth and influence in the cryptocurrency space. With its unique approach and robust backing, UStb is poised to offer new opportunities for risk management and investment in the ever-evolving crypto market.
