Vitalik Buterin on AI Risks and Cryptocurrency Interactions

In a recent event, Ethereum x AI Confluence Day, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin joined a panel discussion with Emad Mostak, founder of Stability AI. They delved into the development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its interaction with humans, shedding light on some critical risks and opportunities.

Key Risks of AI Development

Buterin highlighted two significant risks associated with the rapid advancement of AI technology. Firstly, there is the threat of AI evolving into a superintelligence, a scenario for which humanity is currently unprepared. Secondly, AI has the potential to enhance centralized entities, enabling them to impose a totalitarian system globally.
“Both of these risks are very important to consider, and I believe most people working on AI want to avoid them,” emphasized Buterin.

Decentralization in AI and Blockchain

Buterin also discussed the concept of decentralization, noting its broad significance. While some people associate decentralization strictly with blockchain projects, others interpret it differently. In the context of AI-based technologies, decentralization holds its own unique meaning.
“Ultimately, the most decentralized AI is the one you control yourself,” stated Buterin.
As an example of a decentralized AI model, he mentioned a version of the large language model LLaMa 3, which can operate using an Nvidia 4070 graphics card. This represents a technology accessible to individuals rather than a global network of separate nodes.
“The philosophy of open-source, open AI, and cryptocurrency decentralization should be viewed as different methods of achieving a single goal: a more equitable distribution of power,” added Buterin.

Applications of AI in Various Domains

During the discussion, the participants identified several areas where AI technology would be particularly beneficial. According to Emad Mostak, medicine and education are among the most promising fields. Buterin introduced the concept of a “protective AI” that could be utilized locally to combat fraudulent schemes and alert individuals to potential risks.
“An AI capable of reading your messages could signal possible scams, saying: ‘this message looks like a scam; seven thousand people have reported similar ones.’ Such AI could operate locally, protecting your data and providing valuable insights,” Buterin explained.

Integrating AI with Cryptocurrency

Buterin also touched on the intersection of cryptocurrency and AI technologies. He noted that AI has been a part of the Web3 industry for over a decade, citing arbitrage bots trading on Automated Market Makers (AMMs) as an example.
One intriguing application of AI in the crypto sphere, according to Buterin, is in prediction markets. AI can combat “bad actors” and reduce the influence of recurring reasoning patterns commonly found in this segment. This can lead to creating more fair and efficient prediction markets.
“You have this cryptocurrency mechanism that acts as a kind of decentralized, very democratic voting scheme. Then you have cryptocurrency incentives, and you have AI ensuring fast speeds at low costs. When we combine all this, I think one of the use cases for crypto and AI that is very underrated,” summarized Buterin.
Mostak also expressed that cryptocurrencies could finance open-source AI development.
“Bitcoin, for instance, consumes 160 TWh of energy annually—more than half of what all data centers worldwide consume. We could use this energy for intelligent currency systems and public goods, like safer AI models,” noted the entrepreneur.

Aligning AI with Ethical Norms

In concluding the discussion, Buterin emphasized that our future hinges on aligning AI incentives with ethical standards. If efforts are concentrated on creating models and datasets prioritizing safety, the motivations for developing dangerous AI will be significantly reduced.
This insightful panel highlighted the profound implications of AI and blockchain intersection, urging a collective focus on ethical and decentralized approaches to harness these transformative technologies for the greater good.
