Riot Platforms Declares $84.4 Million Net Loss in Q2 2024

Riot Platforms, a leading Bitcoin miner, has reported a net loss of $84.4 million for the second quarter of 2024. This financial setback is primarily attributed to the Bitcoin halving event that occurred in April 2024.

Impact of Bitcoin Halving on Riot’s Financials

The halving event significantly reduced the number of Bitcoins mined by Riot Platforms, dropping from 1775 BTC in the same period of 2023 to 844 BTC in 2024. This 52% decline in Bitcoin production was a major factor in the company’s financial performance.

Increased Operational Expenses

In addition to the reduced Bitcoin yield, Riot Platforms faced increased commercial and administrative expenses, along with stock-based compensation. These costs collectively exceeded $61 million, further impacting the company’s financial health.

Revenue Breakdown

Despite these challenges, Riot Platforms generated $70 million in total revenue. Bitcoin mining contributed $55.8 million, while the engineering segment brought in $9.6 million. Hosting services and other income accounted for an additional $4.6 million.

Cost of Bitcoin Production

The report highlighted that the average direct cost of mining Bitcoin, considering energy credits, was $25,327 per quarter, compared to $5734 for the same period in 2023. This increase underscores the rising costs associated with Bitcoin mining operations.

Future Projections

Riot Platforms maintains a positive outlook, with plans to expand its hash rate to 36 EH/s by the end of 2024 and further to 56 EH/s in 2025. The company’s balance sheet holds 9334 BTC, valued at $604 million, and a working capital exceeding $646 million.

Expansion and Acquisition

To support its growth strategy, Riot Platforms recently acquired Block Mining for $92.5 million, adding 60 MW to its current production capacity.

Stock Performance

Riot Platforms’ stock has seen a 1.74% decline over the past 24 hours, currently trading at $10.19. Over the past week, the stock has dropped by 13.6%, with a market capitalization of $2.94 billion.
Riot Platforms’ ongoing efforts to expand its mining operations and improve efficiency are critical as the company navigates the challenges posed by the Bitcoin halving and rising operational costs. The forthcoming increase in hash rate and strategic acquisitions are set to enhance the company’s position in the competitive cryptocurrency mining sector.
