ETHTrustFund Accused of Rug Pull: $2 Million Stolen

In a shocking turn of events, the ETHTrustFund project within the Base ecosystem has come under fire for allegedly orchestrating a rug pull that resulted in the theft of $2 million. According to experts from PeckShield and affected users, the developers withdrew funds from the protocol and ceased all forms of communication. This incident first came to light on July 21, 2024.

Developers Disappear, Leaving Investors in the Lurch

Octoshi.eth, a user closely monitoring the project, reported that the project’s representatives transferred funds from the treasury to a new address. “It seems that after months of intentional inactivity, they decided to steal the funds,” he remarked. Further investigations revealed that the developer named Peng, who was behind ETHTrustFund, had been unresponsive for about three months, ignoring messages on Telegram and social media platforms.

Funds Laundered via Crypto Mixers

PeckShield’s analysis indicated that the stolen funds were laundered through cryptocurrency mixers such as Tornado Cash and Railgun. The preliminary estimate of the damage caused by this rug pull stands at approximately $2 million. This incident follows a similar event in June 2024, where the eco-friendly project Gemholic executed a rug pull, resulting in a $3.5 million loss.

Implications for the Crypto Community

This latest rug pull has significant implications for the crypto community, highlighting the persistent risks associated with decentralized finance (DeFi) projects. It underscores the need for rigorous due diligence and enhanced security measures to protect investors. As the crypto landscape evolves, such incidents serve as stark reminders of the vulnerabilities that exist within the ecosystem.
The broader impact on the crypto market is substantial, as trust in new and emerging projects continues to waver. Investors are urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant to safeguard their assets against potential fraud.
By staying informed and aware of the latest developments, the crypto community can better navigate the complexities of this rapidly changing environment, ensuring a more secure and trustworthy investment landscape.
