BlockFi to Conduct Compensations in July via Coinbase

BlockFi, a prominent name in the cryptocurrency lending space, announced its intention to begin compensating its clients in July 2024. The compensation process will be executed through Coinbase, as detailed in a blog post from the company.

Distribution Details and Eligibility

The company clarified that clients will receive notifications via the email addresses linked to their BlockFi accounts. However, due to regulatory requirements, only U.S. citizens will be eligible for these compensations. Non-U.S. clients will unfortunately not receive any payouts.

Partnership with Coinbase

BlockFi has engaged Coinbase as its distribution partner to ensure a seamless process for transferring cryptocurrency to the BlockFi Interest Account (BIA). This collaboration aims to maintain continuity and reliability in the compensation process.

Bankruptcy and Legal Resolutions

BlockFi declared bankruptcy in November 2022 and initially planned to distribute funds by summer 2023. The company completed its bankruptcy proceedings in October 2023, after receiving court approval for its liquidation plan. This plan includes recovering assets from FTX and Three Arrows Capital (3AC).

Legal Settlements and Platform Closure

In February 2024, BlockFi and 3AC settled counterclaims worth $409 million. Additionally, BlockFi reached a “principle agreement” with FTX and Alameda Research for a total payout of $874.5 million. In May 2024, BlockFi announced the final shutdown of its web platform, advising users to download any available data before the closure.
BlockFi’s journey through bankruptcy and its efforts to compensate its clients mark a significant chapter in the crypto world. This process highlights the complexities and regulatory challenges inherent in the cryptocurrency lending space. As BlockFi moves forward with its compensation plan, the broader crypto market will be watching closely to gauge the implications for similar companies and their clients.
