US Uncovers Crypto Scam Involving Fake Business School Teachers

4 Min Read

The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) has uncovered a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme involving fake business schools.

  • Fraudulent “business schools” lured investors with promises of incredible profits.
  • Victims were invited to join WhatsApp and Telegram groups for trading signals and investment advice.
  • Investors were asked to take out loans to access exclusive offers and provide personal information.
  • Organizers threatened legal action if victims did not repay the loans in cryptocurrency.
  • The scam involved fake transactions and unfulfilled promises of substantial returns.

Unveiling the Crypto Scam

The Washington State Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) has recently uncovered a cryptocurrency fraud scheme revolving around fake business schools and academies. These institutions, posing as educational entities, enticed individuals with promises of “incredible profits” through investment courses. Predominantly targeting social media users on platforms like Facebook, the fraudsters invited potential victims to join new communities.
Once hooked, victims were added to WhatsApp and Telegram groups where they received trading signals and investment advice. However, the intent behind these interactions was far from educational.

Manipulative Tactics and Deceptive Practices

As the relationship progressed, these so-called academies encouraged investors to take out loans to meet capital requirements for “exclusive offers.” Victims were asked to provide personal details and sign loan documents. Even those who declined the loan offers found themselves on the hook, as the scammers took out loans in their names.
Despite showing screenshots of purported transactions to lend credibility, blockchain analysts noted that no actual transfers occurred. This deceptive practice was designed to create a facade of legitimacy.

From Promises to Extortion

Initially, victims were assured that the loans could be repaid using profits from their investments. However, this promise quickly turned into a nightmare. The business schools froze accounts and began threatening legal action unless the victims repaid the loans with their own cryptocurrency funds.
“Victims who refused to repay the loans received threatening messages and letters demanding debt repayment, with claims of impending legal action,” noted the DFI.

The Case of Excellence and Innovation Fortune

One notable instance involved a so-called business school named Excellence and Innovation Fortune. This entity claimed to be a financial and investment institution but was, in reality, part of the fraudulent scheme offering the fake cryptocurrency ICHCOIN. In one case, a victim was sent 500 USDT to test the platform, eventually leading the victim to transfer $300,000 to the fraudsters.
The victim was supposed to receive a deposit of 450,000 USDT to their ICHCOIN account, but blockchain data did not confirm this transaction. This scam also spread through WhatsApp, where investors were asked to sign loan documents with their personal details.

Advisory for Investors

In light of these revelations, the Washington financial regulator has urged users to exercise caution with individuals and organizations offering investment or financial services. This advisory comes as a stark reminder of the ever-present risks in the cryptocurrency landscape.
In summary, the exposure of this fraudulent scheme by DFI underscores the importance of vigilance and due diligence in the crypto investment space. As cryptocurrencies continue to evolve, so do the tactics of fraudsters, making it crucial for investors to stay informed and cautious. This incident serves as a critical reminder of the potential pitfalls and the need for regulatory oversight to protect unsuspecting investors.
