  • PayPal’s PYUSD stablecoin crosses $500 million market cap.
  • Key integrations with Curve and Frax Finance boost PYUSD’s growth.
  • Significant holdings in Ethereum and Solana networks.
  • Paxos, Crypto.com, and Defiance Capital are major holders.

Introduction

The market capitalization of PayPal’s USD-backed stablecoin, PYUSD, has broken through the $500 million mark. At the time of writing, the market cap stands at $534.5 million, according to DeFiLlama. This achievement reflects the growing prominence of PYUSD in the cryptocurrency market, following its recent launch on the Solana network.

Strategic Network Expansion

PYUSD’s remarkable growth can be attributed to its strategic deployment across various blockchain networks. With nearly $399 million in assets on the Ethereum network and an additional $134.5 million on Solana, PYUSD has diversified its presence. The substantial increase in market capitalization occurred within the past 30 days, coinciding with its launch on the Solana blockchain.

Integration with DeFi Protocols

The integration of PYUSD into decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols such as Curve and Frax Finance has played a pivotal role in its growth. These integrations have not only enhanced PYUSD’s utility but have also positioned it among the top 10 stablecoins by market capitalization, surpassing competitors like Ethena and Frax Finance. Notably, PYUSD has become one of the top three liquidity pools on Curve.

Major Stakeholders and Holdings

Paxos, the primary issuer of PYUSD, holds the largest share of the stablecoin on the Ethereum network, with $112 million. Following closely are Crypto.com with $103 million and Defiance Capital with $35 million. Other notable holders include BitGo and Curve, holding $14.8 million and $14 million, respectively. These significant holdings underline the confidence and acceptance of PYUSD within the crypto community.

Auditing and Transparency

In August 2023, PayPal launched PYUSD after extensive development efforts that began in early 2022. The first audit of PYUSD conducted by Paxos in September 2023 confirmed that the stablecoin is fully backed, primarily by repurchase agreements involving U.S. Treasury bonds. This transparency and assurance of backing have further bolstered investor confidence in PYUSD.
PayPal’s PYUSD stablecoin has thus firmly established itself in the cryptocurrency market, driven by strategic network expansion, integration with leading DeFi protocols, and substantial backing by major stakeholders. As PYUSD continues to grow, its impact on the broader crypto market will be closely watched by investors and industry analysts alike.
