The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the National Basketball Association have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at protecting the integrity of professional basketball in prediction markets. The initiative comes amid heightened scrutiny of insider activity on such platforms, after U.S. lawmakers in April 2026 called on the CFTC to take additional measures against abuses.
Under the agreement, the CFTC and the NBA will regularly share information and jointly discuss issues related to the integrity of market participants. The cooperation is expected to help identify potential misconduct, including insider trading and fraud.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig said:
“The NBA has joined the MLB and the NHL in taking a responsible step to protect the integrity of sports and prediction market participants from misconduct such as insider trading and fraud.”
Selig also thanked NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for working with the regulator and for his attention to financial market transparency.
The NBA is the third major U.S. professional sports league to enter into such an agreement with the CFTC. Major League Baseball and the National Hockey League previously signed similar agreements with the regulator.
