- Ledger unveiled the Android-based Atom device on Oct. 15, 2026, combining hardware-wallet functions with smartphone features.
- The Founder’s Edition will cost $849, with shipments scheduled to begin in summer 2027 after certification.
- The announcement came amid an investigation into modified Ledger wallets linked to the alleged theft of more than $86 million, a figure Ledger has not confirmed.
Ledger unveiled its Android-based Atom device at the Op3n event in Paris on Oct. 15, 2026. The product combines a hardware cryptocurrency wallet with smartphone features and uses a separate secure environment to sign transactions.
Atom resembles a conventional smartphone and supports Android apps, but it does not provide standard voice calls or SMS. Ledger said the product is not intended to replace a user’s primary phone.
Atom specifications and security
The device runs Android Open Source Project, or AOSP, alongside Ledger OS. It processes cryptocurrency operations in a separate Secure Mode that an FPGA chip isolates from Android.
According to Ledger, third-party apps will not be able to alter transaction details displayed to users during signing. A Secure Element chip certified at the EAL6+ level protects cryptographic operations.
Atom includes a 6.77-inch OLED display with a 60 Hz refresh rate, a Qualcomm Dragonwing processor and a 4,000 mAh battery. A physical switch cuts power to the camera and microphone.
The device also supports encrypted messaging through GPG/OpenPGP. It integrates with Solana Mobile and provides access to apps in the Seeker ecosystem.
Ledger said Atom will support AI agents through its Ledger Agent Intent system and integration with OpenClaw. The device has a user-replaceable battery, and Ledger plans to provide five years of Android updates.
Ledger has added mechanisms designed to detect physical tampering, including attempts to open the case, remove the screen or access internal components. A separate power source keeps the sensors operating when the device is switched off.
The company is also considering an integration with the Kraken cryptocurrency exchange that would allow users to approve individual operations within Atom’s secure environment.
The limited Founder’s Edition will cost $849. Customers must pay a refundable $100 deposit to reserve a device. Ledger plans to raise the retail price to $899 after launch, with shipments scheduled to begin in summer 2027 once certification is complete.
Modified-wallet investigation
Ledger introduced Atom while investigators examine unauthorized modifications to Ledger wallets distributed by third-party sellers in Southeast Asia.
The company previously found a hardware implant in one device that could intercept a user’s seed phrase during initial setup. According to researchers, attackers connected an additional microchip to the screen’s data lines, allowing it to read the 24-word secret phrase and transmit the information over a mobile network.
Estimated losses linked to the alleged theft exceed $86 million. Ledger has not confirmed that figure, and investigators have not determined how the malicious components were installed.
Ledger said Atom’s new security mechanisms will be able to prevent similar attacks. Its Core Protection system is designed to detect tampering with protected components, although the system’s effectiveness is currently supported by the manufacturer’s claims rather than independent test results.
The investigation follows other reported security issues involving Ledger products. In August 2026, OneKey founder Yishi Wang reported finding a vulnerability in Ledger’s Ethereum app for its hardware wallets.
Researchers reproduced an attack in which a user saw one transaction on the device’s screen but signed a different transaction. The vulnerability affected app version 1.22.1 and was fixed in version 1.22.3.
