Trezor Unveils New Flagship Wallet: Safe 5
At the BTC Prague 2024 event, renowned hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor revealed its latest flagship model, the Trezor Safe 5. Designed for secure self-custody, the Safe 5 allows users to manage their crypto funds effortlessly through the Trezor Suite app, compatible with both smartphones and PCs.
Advanced Features and Security
The Trezor Safe 5 stands out with its large, color touchscreen, shielded by durable Gorilla Glass, making it resistant to mechanical damage. One of its most notable features is the new backup system for the private key, described by Trezor’s CEO, Matej Zak:
“The backup is created using Shamir’s Secret Sharing Scheme, allowing the key to be split into multiple fragments. Users can decide how many fragments to create and how many are needed to restore access to the wallet.”
Additionally, the Safe 5 boasts an EAL 6+ security certification, ensuring a high level of protection against potential threats.
Color Options and Availability
The Trezor Safe 5 will be available in four color options. Two of these, Bitcoin Orange and Graphite Black, are currently available for pre-order, with sales starting in July 2024. The remaining colors, Green Beryl and Violet Ore, are anticipated to hit the market by mid-August 2024, priced at $169 each.
Introducing Trezor Expert
Alongside the Safe 5, Trezor also announced the launch of Trezor Expert, a personal consultation service designed to assist customers in setting up their crypto wallets. This service is priced at $99 and ensures that consultants do not have access to the client’s private data.
Market Reactions and Previous Models
The release of these new products comes amid a surge in Trezor wallet sales, partly due to community criticism of its competitor, Ledger. Ledger faced backlash after an update that allowed the company access to customers’ private key backups. Trezor aims to capitalize on this market sentiment with its latest offerings.
Previously, Trezor introduced its flagship model, the Trezor Safe 3, in October 2023, marking a significant step in its product evolution.
Trezor’s latest innovations, the Safe 5 and Trezor Expert, underscore its commitment to providing secure, user-friendly crypto solutions. These advancements are expected to enhance user experience and reinforce Trezor’s position in the competitive cryptocurrency hardware wallet market.
