U.S. President Donald Trump is considering Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton for the role of White House adviser on artificial intelligence, Axios reported. Trump said he expects to decide within three to four days, while the position’s authority remains undefined as the White House also plans a federal AI Force.

Asked about Clayton’s possible appointment, Trump called him “a good man” and said he could see him in the role. The president also said he already has someone in mind, but no final decision has been made.

Clayton’s government experience

Clayton took over as head of U.S. National Intelligence in August 2026. He previously led the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and served as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

During Senate hearings in July, Clayton described AI as both an opportunity and a threat, stressing the need to consider both aspects of the technology.

White House AI roles

The exact powers of the new adviser have not been defined. Trump previously announced the creation of an AI Force that would oversee artificial intelligence development at the federal level, but the White House has not disclosed details of its structure or authority.

David Sacks previously served as the White House adviser on AI and cryptocurrencies. He left the role in March 2026 after completing his term as a special government employee and became co-chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, or PCAST.

PCAST was created by a Trump executive order in January 2025. The council advises the president on science, technology and innovation, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing and other critical areas. It can include up to 24 representatives from government, the scientific community and the technology industry.
