Bybit Opens Registration for Chinese Clients

3 Min Read Tags:

Bybit, one of the leading offshore cryptocurrency exchanges, has surprisingly opened registration and KYC verification for users in China, as reported by journalist Colin Wu.

  • Bybit now allows Chinese users to register and complete KYC verification.
  • Despite the change, Mainland China remains listed among prohibited jurisdictions in Bybit’s FAQ section.
  • China is no longer listed in the “Terms of Service” prohibited jurisdictions.
  • Bybit linked this decision to withdrawing its license application in Hong Kong.
  • The Hong Kong regulator now requires a guarantee against servicing Mainland Chinese clients for licensing.

Bybit Opens Registration for Chinese Users

In a surprising move, the offshore cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has initiated the registration and KYC (Know Your Customer) verification process for users in China. The announcement was made by well-known journalist Colin Wu, who also shared screenshots of the new client registration form on Bybit’s website. This form now includes China as a selectable jurisdiction.

Contradictory Information on Prohibited Jurisdictions

Interestingly, while Bybit has opened up registration for Chinese users, its FAQ section still lists Mainland China as one of the prohibited jurisdictions. However, the “Terms of Service” section has removed China from the list of banned regions. This inconsistency has raised questions among the crypto community about Bybit’s exact stance and regulatory compliance.

Implications of Bybit’s Decision

Wu highlighted that local users in China can now complete the KYC process using various forms of identification, such as ID cards, passports, driver’s licenses, or residence permits. This development is significant as Bybit had previously maintained a strict prohibition on Chinese users.

Connection to Hong Kong Licensing

Colin Wu also noted that Bybit’s decision might be related to its recent withdrawal from the licensing process in Hong Kong. On May 31, 2024, the local regulator officially banned the operation of cryptocurrency exchanges that did not complete the registration process. Bybit, along with several other companies, withdrew its application.
Subsequent reports suggested that the Hong Kong regulator required a guaranteed refusal to service customers from Mainland China as a condition for granting a license. This regulatory pressure may have influenced Bybit’s strategic decision to open registration for Chinese users.

Uncertain Future and Market Impact

At the time of writing, Bybit has not officially commented on this unexpected development. The move has sparked discussions within the cryptocurrency community about its potential impact on the market. Allowing Chinese users to register could significantly boost Bybit’s user base and trading volume, given China’s large population and interest in digital assets.
This decision also raises questions about the future regulatory landscape for cryptocurrency exchanges operating in or around China. As Bybit navigates these complex regulatory waters, the broader implications for the crypto market remain to be seen.
