Ethereum Spot ETF Issuers Submit Updated SEC Applications

3 Min Read Tags:

In a significant move within the crypto sector, Invesco Galaxy, VanEck, and other issuers have submitted updated S-1 filings for spot Ethereum ETFs to the SEC.

  • Franklin Templeton discloses the first-ever spot Ethereum ETF fee.
  • ARK Invest ends its collaboration with 21Shares for Ethereum-ETF.
  • SEC approval needed for trading despite filing updates.

Major Filings and Disclosure

On May 31, 2024, Franklin Templeton, VanEck, Invesco, and Galaxy made headlines by submitting amended S-1 filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). According to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst James Seyffart, these filings mark a pivotal development in the cryptocurrency market.
Franklin Templeton distinguished itself by being the first company to reveal its fee structure to investors. The updated document specifies, “Fees will be accrued daily at an annual rate of 0.19% of the Fund’s net asset value.”

Impact on the ETF Market

Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Eric Balchunas described Franklin Templeton’s filing as “the first shot in the fee war for spot Ethereum ETFs”. The management fee, also known as the sponsor’s fee, is a crucial competitive factor for ETFs. Typically, investors gravitate towards products with the lowest fees.
Despite other companies also submitting revised S-1 filings on May 31, none disclosed their fee amounts. BlackRock and Grayscale Investments made their amendments on May 29 and May 30, respectively.

ARK Invest’s Strategic Shift

Amidst these filings, ARK Invest confirmed it has ceased collaboration with 21Shares and will not engage in a joint Ethereum-ETF launch. The decision was attributed to a reevaluation of their investment strategy, reflecting the dynamic nature of the cryptocurrency investment landscape.

Awaiting SEC Approval

It’s important to note that although the SEC officially approved spot Ethereum ETFs on May 23, 2024, trading cannot commence until the regulator gives the green light to the S-1 forms from the issuers. This process could take several months, adding a layer of anticipation to the market.
These developments highlight the rapidly evolving landscape of cryptocurrency investment products and the strategic maneuvers of major financial players. The disclosed fee by Franklin Templeton could set a precedent, potentially influencing the competitive dynamics within the ETF market.
As the cryptocurrency market continues to mature, these filings underscore the importance of regulatory compliance and strategic positioning for firms looking to capitalize on emerging opportunities. The broader impact on the crypto market will depend on how these initial moves shape investor preferences and regulatory responses in the coming months.
