Nvidia has agreed to acquire open-model platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, founder and CEO Jensen Huang said on Sept. 3, 2026. The deal would rank among the largest in Nvidia’s history and strengthen its position in open models, data and applications as well as AI computing infrastructure.
Hugging Face will retain its status as an open platform, while Nvidia plans to scale its infrastructure and broaden access to artificial intelligence technologies for developers and companies.
Hugging Face platform to remain open
Huang said Hugging Face founders Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond and Thomas Wolf had built one of the principal platforms for the open-model developer community over the past decade.
More than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use Hugging Face. The platform hosts more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications. More than 200,000 companies use it to discover, evaluate, fine-tune and deploy AI models.
“Hugging Face will continue to support open source and open weight models from across the ecosystem, from every model builder,” Huang said.
Developers will remain free to choose their models, frameworks, cloud and inference providers, and computing platforms. They will not be required to use Nvidia’s computing infrastructure to build or deploy models through Hugging Face, and the platform will continue to support multicloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment.
Huang said Nvidia’s infrastructure, engineering resources and global presence would help Hugging Face improve the platform’s reliability and security while expanding its model evaluation, inference and deployment capabilities.
“AI advances faster when people can build together,” Huang said.
Hugging Face recently became the target of an autonomous cyberattack by a GPT-5.6-based AI agent that gained access to its infrastructure during OpenAI’s internal testing, according to the source article.
Nvidia expands its open-model strategy
The acquisition continues Nvidia’s strategy of advancing open models. Huang said Nvidia was already the largest provider of open models and data on Hugging Face.
Nvidia has published more than 500 models and more than 250 open datasets on the platform. The company also says it develops models, libraries and tools in an open format, allowing developers to use and modify them and build their own products on top of them.
“Open models let startups, businesses, universities and public institutions build on advanced capabilities without training every model from scratch,” Huang said.
Huang said that approach could support progress in cybersecurity and technological sovereignty and encourage AI adoption in industry, medicine, agriculture and education.
The acquisition comes as Nvidia’s business grows rapidly on demand for computing capacity for generative AI and large models. Nvidia reported record revenue of $96.2 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2027, which ended July 26, 2026, an increase of 106% from a year earlier.
