ENS Token Holders Restructure Governance

The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) community has taken a significant step by approving a proposal that reshapes its governance structure. The “Next Era of ENS DAO” initiative transforms the ENS Foundation into an operational entity with full administrative control over $65 million. This decision marks a new chapter for ENS, as it empowers the foundation to function independently while maintaining DAO oversight over protocol and token management.

Operational Independence and Strategic Engagement

The newly formed ENS Foundation is now equipped to represent the project at various international forums like ICANN, IETF, and W3C. This strategic move allows it to engage directly with regulators and legislators, manage trademarks and brand assets, and hire staff for operational tasks. Such structural changes aim to enhance ENS’s legal standing and operational efficacy.

Why Was a Separate Fund Necessary?

Over nearly ten years, ENS has evolved into a critical component of Ethereum infrastructure, supporting millions of domain names integrated across wallets, applications, and L2 networks. However, its decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) had limited capabilities in legal representation. Now, ENS Foundation can effectively handle these responsibilities.

Security Measures for Fund Management

To ensure transparency and security in fund management, each transaction within the endowment fund undergoes a mandatory 9-day time lock. During this period, the Security Council can veto any transaction deemed unsuitable. Additionally, all financial activities are aligned with an approved budget and subject to public reporting along with annual audits.

The Role of ENS Labs Post-Restructuring

While the foundation will focus on broader representational roles and operational duties, ENS Labs will continue its work on protocol development autonomously. This includes focusing on product engineering tasks such as developing ENSv2 infrastructure.

Leadership Within the New Structure

Alexander Urbelis leads as Executive Director alongside notable members like Nick Johnson (founder of ENS), Kartik Talwar (general partner at A.Capital Ventures), Brett Sun (co-founder of Prelude), and Anthony Loytenegger (CEO of Aragon). With experienced directors steering strategic decisions, this leadership team is poised to guide future developments effectively.
In summary, this governance restructuring provides a robust framework that balances autonomy for operational growth while ensuring community-driven oversight remains intact through DAO mechanisms. As part of these changes—though administrative control extends over substantial funds—the core governance attributes like smart contract updates or director appointments continue under token holder purview—ensuring democratic integrity within this evolving ecosystem.
