The recent Chainalysis report on wrench attacks reveals a worrying trend. In just six months, from January to June 2026, there were 46 physical assaults targeting those within the cryptocurrency community. These incidents led to financial damages surpassing $30 million. Compared to losses of $58 million for the entirety of 2025, this year is poised to set an unfortunate record if current trends continue.
While last year saw significant financial impacts from such incidents, this year’s figures are already alarmingly high. Notably, these statistics only reflect successful attacks.

A Broader Scope: Failed Attempts Still Add Up

When considering all attempts—including extortion and theft where assets could be frozen or recovered—the total potential losses paint a more extensive picture. The figures rose from $316 million in 2024 down to $180 million in 2025, with an additional $107 million already recorded in early 2026.
Interestingly, despite the increase in physical threats, the success rate for attackers has dropped. Only about 26% of these violent theft attempts have resulted in ransom payments this year. This is a steep decline from previous years where success rates were as high as 49% in 2025 and even higher at 67% in 2024.

Changing Criminal Tactics

Amidst rising attack numbers, kidnappings have become the most frequently reported incidents. They are closely followed by home invasions and hostage situations—all forms of violent crime that have now become more prevalent.
Home invasions saw a significant rise compared to last year—from constituting just 14% of cases in 2025 to now making up about 37%.

France: A Hotspot for Crypto Crimes

France stands out with its high number of reported incidents since early records began post-2023. Although initially few cases were recorded until around mid-2025—with only several known instances—by mid-2026 France had seen public reports tallying up to thirty known events. However likely many more remain unreported; local authorities alone cited seventy-seven occurrences during investigations into criminal activity involving crypto-assets.
A major reason behind this surge can be traced back primarily due possibly linked towards unauthorized data leaks occurring back during late-2024—specifically involving sensitive details regarding
