  • Aave proposes to decommission 75 asset reserves and close operations in six networks.
  • This initiative is part of an updated risk management strategy.
  • The proposal affects assets with a total supply of $98.1 million and open borrowings of $15.6 million.
  • Key networks affected include Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos.
  • The goal is to reduce maintenance costs for underutilized assets and markets.

Introduction

In a strategic move to enhance its risk management framework, Aave has proposed the decommissioning of 75 asset reserves alongside the closure of deployments across six different networks. This decision underscores Aave’s commitment to refining its operations by focusing on more active assets and markets.

Details of the Proposal

The Aave risk management team has put forth a proposal aimed at discontinuing support for certain low-usage assets and networks. Specifically, these changes impact asset reserves with a cumulative supply value of $98.1 million and open borrowings amounting to $15.6 million. Founder and CEO Stani Kulechov emphasized that following an extensive review, the protocol will cease support for 50 low-adoption asset reserves distributed across multiple deployments.
Moreover, Aave plans to methodically wind down its operations on the Sonic, Scroll, zkSync, Metis, Soneium, and Aptos networks. This action will affect an additional set of 25 asset reserves.

Reasons Behind the Decommissioning

The primary rationale behind this initiative is cost-efficiency in maintaining underutilized assets. Each reserve demands ongoing support activities like price oracle maintenance, risk parameter monitoring, and liquidation mechanism implementation. When an asset’s utilization falls below a justifiable threshold, the costs associated with its upkeep outweigh benefits.
Additionally:
– Tokens like USDC.e and USDbC are being removed where native versions are already available.
– Support for MaticX will end due to project winding down by its issuer.
– Pendle PT tokens are being phased out post-maturity.
– Six smaller markets face closure due to insufficient activity levels that no longer justify their maintenance expenses.

Implementation Plan

Aave intends to gradually phase out these reserves while allowing users ample time to safely close their positions. As part of this transition:
– Reserves will be frozen; new deposits or loans won’t be possible.
– Liquidity supply limits and borrowing caps will be reduced drastically.
– The Reserve Factor for open-loan reserves will increase up to 99%, encouraging users to withdraw liquidity and repay debts promptly.
Stani Kulechov stated that Aave will continue revisiting all protocol deployments in alignment with new risk management frameworks regularly.
Finally: earlier rumors regarding Kraken’s investment talks were dismissed by Aave’s founder as unfounded speculation amidst this strategic pivot towards optimized resource allocation strategies within their ecosystem—focusing instead on fostering sustainable growth through diligent oversight mechanisms tailored specifically around each unique deployment scenario encountered along various project lifecycles today!
