BNY Launches Blockchain-Based Record-Keeping for Tokenized Funds

As blockchain technology continues to permeate various sectors, BNY Mellon has taken a significant step forward by launching a blockchain-driven digital platform for transfer agency services. This new initiative is set to redefine how fund ownership records are maintained, with Baillie Gifford, BlackRock, and Dreyfus leading the charge as early adopters.

Modernizing Financial Infrastructure

BNY Mellon’s latest move integrates blockchain into its existing systems, signaling a modernization of Wall Street’s infrastructure. By utilizing distributed ledger technology (DLT), the bank aims to create a single source of truth for property rights. This development is expected to cut down on intermediaries and speed up settlement processes.
Carolyn Weinberg, BNY’s Head of Product and Innovation, highlights that this transformation will fundamentally alter the core functions of fund operations by shifting bookkeeping and registries onto the blockchain. Presently managing approximately $8.6 trillion in assets across 7.6 million accounts, BNY Mellon’s transfer agency business stands at the forefront of this digital evolution.

Pioneers in Blockchain Adoption

The British investment firm Baillie Gifford is set to pioneer this platform in launching the UK’s first fully native tokenized fund under local regulation. Additionally, BlackRock and Dreyfus—part of BNY’s money markets and liquidity management division—plan similar implementations using this infrastructure.
A key advantage noted by Baillie Gifford is the provision of a unified ledger agreed upon by all market participants through blockchain technology. Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson also emphasizes that while financial companies often expend significant resources reconciling data across various systems, blockchain ensures an updated real-time single source of information.

Challenges Ahead

Despite these advancements, BNY acknowledges that traditional financial infrastructures will coexist with blockchain solutions for years due to inherent risks such as potential vulnerabilities in smart contracts and cross-network bridges.
In summary, BNY Mellon’s launch represents a pivotal moment in integrating cutting-edge technology within established financial frameworks. The implications extend beyond operational efficiencies: they herald an era where transparency and security are paramount in financial transactions—a critical evolution as seen with Morgan Stanley’s recent introduction of Ethereum- and Solana-based exchange-traded products (ETPs). As these technologies mature, their broader impact on the crypto market remains profound yet promising.
